LED Christmas lights last a long time, but not by accident. Most of the runs that fail early were not worn out by December evenings; they were damaged in January during takedown, cooked in an attic through July, or left with water in a socket for eight months. The difference between a run that lasts a couple of seasons and one that lasts many is almost entirely in how it is taken down, tested, stored and checked before it goes back up. Season-end takedown
Pick a dry day above freezing. Cold makes the wire and clips brittle, and a clip that would flex in October will snap in January and take a piece of shingle tab with it. Unplug every run at the outlet before touching anything. Work in the reverse order of the install, starting at the end farthest from the plug, and remove each clip from the roof edge by hand rather than pulling the wire and letting the clips pop off. Pulling is faster and it is exactly how sockets get cracked and fascia gets scratched.
As each section comes down, lay it out straight on a tarp or the driveway rather than heaping it. Leave the bulbs in the sockets. - Pull out the photos and the sketch from last January and confirm every labelled run is present.
- Uncoil each run on the driveway, look along its length for chewed, cracked or crushed sections, and check each plug for cracks or corrosion.
- Plug each run into a GFCI outlet and confirm every bulb lights. Replace dark bulbs, and replace the socket if a good bulb stays dark.
- Check that the socket wire is not stiff or brittle when flexed gently. Insulation that cracks when bent has reached the end of its life.
